Which songs of Kate were shocking tot you when first hearing or seeing them?
Mine on first hearing: Sat in your Lap, Big Stripey Lie, Leave it Open, Get out of My House, The Craft of Love, Pick the rare flower, Hounds of Love (alternative version). On first seeing: The Wedding List (Christmas special performance), Hammer Horror (live), Babooshka, Breathing, James and the Cold Gun (live)

I love the Dreaming now, but when I first heard it it sounded like a lot of noise and confused the crap out of me...nothing else has really shocked me though,
but there are plenty of songs I haven't liked upon the first listen.

Sexual Healing was disappointing because it was too restrained. It had the potential to be deeply sexual, but it had a profound lack of mojo.
The "Sat In Your Lap" 7" was a shock, as was the one for "The Dreaming". |

"Big Stripey Lie", which I still skip past. But I remember more my first reaction to "Mrs Bartolozzi", something along the lines of
"what the hell was that?!" But I love it now.
I am still disappointed with the re-do of "Wuthering Heights", hearing Kate's voice crack on "Cathy" breaks my heart. |

The only time I have been shocked by Kate's music was the first time I heard "The Dreaming" album, though I had been very familiar with Sat in
Your Lap before that. It was just so beyond what I had expected, based on her previous music. As it happened, "beyond what I expected" moved from
worrying to wonderful the more I listened to the album!
After The Dreaming, I have surprise and/or amazed, but never shocked! Zeb |

more amazed that she pull it off vocal or lyric wise so songs like BSL, POTP i adore. |

For me it's a bit of a toss up between the entire THE DREAMING, the first listen of RUTH via what was then (in '84/'85) considered a bootleg
computer source, and "Big Stripey Lie," which is just great.
Not sure if I understand "shocked" though--does that mean that, initially, I didn't like and was stunned by it? That wasn't the case in any of these--I did LIKE it, but was shocked by the discovery of yet ANOTHER side of Kate's talent. gg |

Instead we get the bleating of an orgasmic sheep. Still I like the pipes especially. The themes of incest in "The Kick Inside" and "Infant Kiss" are probably the most surprising to me. Most artists would not attempt it... |

"Lyra" cause Kates lyrics, even if sometimes obscure, are always unpredictable. The words to this song, unfortunately, were very obvious given the
movie background and reads like a first draft.
He had discovered a pattern within the jumble but still no reasons existed for it.....

I like the song too...even Marvin Gaye's recording. I noticed Kate did not include the closing lyrics from the original i.e., "It's not good to masturbate" probably 'cause she disagrees. 
"For me Big Stripey Lie...it's awful." I also concur...
