Back row L-R: 4th: Martin Purser from Worcester. 5th: Riaz from Wales Front Row L-R 1st: Anthony (is he 'Tony' in the Brew Up photos??) From the Midlands originally I think, now in Canada somewhere. 2nd: ? name, boyfriend of 3rd: my lovely friend Dawn Willbraham from Birmihgham. Arranged several B'ham gatherings, still living in Solihull. I have no idea who anyone else is! Dawn looking like a very lovely cloning of Kate and Judie Tzuke. Britvic 55? Shame on them! Posted all of these somewhere sometime previously, but if anyone knows any of the faces, would be nice to know if they're on the forum! Even after all this time The sun never says to the earth, "You owe me." Look what happens with a Love like that! -It lights the whole Sky. (Hafiz)

What's to show for it? Well, a whole load of new friends for a start, armfuls of photographs and a lovely memory. Why? Yeah, why? There have been two meetings of KB fans to date down at Central Hall in B'ham. Both were very different, but both enjoyable. Still though, that same feeling of friendliness can over. Many people I had never met before, having only ever written to them once or twice maybe to arrange details for the 'Con' Yet there were no barriers, no formal strangeness. It was as though everyone knew everyone else around them which is really great and I'm sure Kate would really appreciate that too! On display for people to muse over was a scrap-book full of various KB cuttings some photo albums, magazines, books, fanzines, (HG of course! Breakthrough, etc ) and the official KBC newsletters. There was a thankyou card for everyone to sign which has now been sent off to Kate, and also on display were all of Kate's UK releases and many foreign imports. Addresses where one can obtain KB merchandise were of great interest and last but not least a competition. Well, towards the end of the night we awarded 1st 2nd and 3rd prize only it sort of went wrong! 3rd prize went to Keith Pitches, second to Donkey and joint first were Mandy Morton and David Sheasby good job they came together eh? Well, that's what we thought we had done! "Oh no:" I whispered to Dean, "Where's the bit off the top of the first prize?" I rummaged in the suitcase where they once had lain. "I gave that to the second" came the reply. "What!" I quietly screamed. Dean rushed over to Donkey and presently reclaimed the prize, while I stopped David and Mandy just in the nick of time from opening the second prize! Phew Time. as it invariably does, soon flew. Those three hours seemed like but minutes... and as I stood there and watched the faces and saw the people I smiled. The light outside was fading and I knew that the four months of racing round chasing my tail had turned out a success and in my heart I knew it had all been worth it. Now all that is left to do is to thank all of you who came along to the 'Con' - I hope that you enjoyed yourself as much as I did! Also a thankyou to the people who came from Cardiff, Glasgow, Bristol, Clywd down there in Wales, Surrey and Leeds, it Was great to meet everyone, thankyou for making it a definite 'Fullhouse' (An extra special thanks to dear Roy for all of his help and support - thankyou!) Now after the convention is over and the memories have been treasured, the photos stored, we all know why this night came about, and we can all do only one thing and that 's to say "Thankyou Kate for the Love, the Light and the Music.... That would make it 1986 which is definitely too early. I am not sure of the exact year, but at the very earliest it is 1989 though I think maybe 1990. I know it is not 1988 at that was the year of my very first Kate gathering - the Wuthering Hike II in November. 1989 was the year my life as a fan really exploded and I started travelling up and down the country to all sorts of gatherings. Actually, now I am thinking more about it, I am pretty sure it was in the summer of '89 that this happening happened!

The person on one knee wearing the Ninth Wave t-shirt (which Cariad Kate magazine used to sell in the late eighties) is Neil Davison. In the third photograph, I do know that the girl holding the Cloudbusting record was a pen friend of mine. I am afraid I cannot remember her name. I don't know if any of those people frequent this forum but if they do, say hello to me! I lost touch with them about 16 or 17 years ago.

He was going to feature significantly in a chapter of my autobiography when I would be recalling the party he held at his flat in 1990 that I remember so well. A bizarre coincidence was this - when I met him and befriended him as a Kate Bush fan I subsequently discovered that he wrote a feature in a magazine called Computing With The Amstrad in the eighties called 'The Pilgrim' which was all about text adventure games. I wrote a letter requesting help for a game (Jewels Of Babylon as it happens) which was referred to in his column. Years later, when I was visiting him in his flat and this weird coincidence reared its head, he went off and checked his files where he kept all his correspondence from that era of his life, and unearthed the letter that I wrote! Such an odd coincidence - and I was to experience many more things like that in the years to come as a Kate fan! I am sorry to hear he died though and am now scared of finding out if other people I knew during that time have passed away too. However, it will reflect in a very positive way in my writing where it will add a special poignancy and a certain resonance to the memories I recall of these wonderful people that I have met who are no longer with us.

There are one or two. I think we may have to have an "in memoriam" page in the book. Sarah for a start. Then Jonathan Corum one of our favourite artists. Another of our artists in the 80s who we think was actually murdered but we're checking details. Three or four subscribers. So it goes. Puts perspective on a lot of things. I remember winning first prize - even though at this remove I can't quite remember what it was...and despite all the innuendo at the time, Mandy and I didn't cheat! Honest! We were very close friends at the time, and our biggeset mutual interest was Kate, so there wasn't a scrap of information we didn't share with each other. It's funny how, even now, I can recall the one question we both failed on: "Which song [from her first two albums] did Kate NOT perform on the Tour of Life?" I guess it was just asked to rub salt into the wounds of those of us who hadn't managed to bag tickets (though I'm clearly not scarred by it). Anyway, it was a lovely get-together during which, as has already been said, everybody just seemed to be friends from the outset. There had obviously been loads of thought put into how the event would run and how it could be made interesting, rather than leaving everybody to just swap their "when I met Kate" stories (sad, that bit, as I have a few of my own that I'm always ready to tell). Tra la! A belated round of applause to all involved. You're top sorts, all of you - yes, even you at the back there. Gilby (also known as David Sheasby). PS: Fortunately, it appears that I managed to avoid being photographed, so my true identity is still secure.

And am about to resurrect the Midlands Bash, as we now have access to a very nice small community centre a stone's throw from home, plus since we moved from the Deep Dark Depths of Beyond (otherwise known as Gornal) and relocated to Wolverhampton it is so much easier for folks to get here. Keep an eye out forupdates. Please remember though this is just the planning stage - but all ideas welcome, and would love to hear from interested parties. Way out, the first Brum Bash was "The Birmingham Kate Bush Convention" held on 15th July 1983. I'm writing it up for the book right now. That probably makes it the first substantial UK Kate fan event. The HomeGround Brew-Up wasn't until November 1983, The Fagins Club do in Manchester organised by John Brent was in February 1984.
