Just listened to this funny little song randomly on my iPod today. Some beautiful images, some odd lyrics and it's subject matter struck me as reminiscent
of Aerial.

Very "British eccentric" to my mind and ears, which is an excellent thing. Something sci-fi about it that I can't quite put my finger on but
probably just boiling down to the implications of the word, "alchemy," and the general complexity of bee behavior.
Whenever I hear the song, I think of "Wax, or the Discover of Television Among the Bees" due, in part, to some of the aural characteristics of the song. I can definitely see a link to AERIAL: it has that "man preoccupied/obsessed by something" stuff, that Kate Bush seems to appreciate, and a bucolic setting. Something about it, too, that reminds me of early Peter Greenaway--like from the time of "A Walk Through H," as if it would work with images from some of his films. gg |

Same, oh wow, what a beautiful song, I hadn't heard this one before! Just when you thought you had heard all the Kate songs a gem pops up.
I'm going to have to go on the search for any others I have missed now! |

What a lovely afternoon
On a cloudbusting kind of day. We took our own 'Mystery Tour' And got completely lost somewhere up in the hills. And we came up on a bee-keeper, And he said "Did you know they can change it all?" You want alchemy. They turn the roses into gold They turn the lilac into honey They're making love for the peaches. And we're thinking, "Who is this guy?" "Is he some kind of nut or what?". He said, "I don't meet many people..", "I'm very busy with the hives.". ZzzzZzzzz.. Sun's gone down.. "When's my cloud of bees coming home?". They got alchemy. They turn the roses into gold They turn the lilac into honey They're making love for the peaches. And they'll do it, Do it for you. They'll do it, Do it for you. "And if you see them, send 'em right on home to me" (what they gonna do...?) They got Aaaaaaaa.. Turn the roses into gold. And they'll do it for you Do it for you (what they gonna do...?) I'll tell Yaaaaaa... Making love for the peaches. (what they gonna do...?)
Daaaaaamaaaaakiiiiindaaaaa honey. (they do it for you) They do it for you. And why not...? They bring me so much pleasure. A favourite of mine too. Very Summer.

That line
Am I right in thinking that the lyrics have never been officially published? Although irrespective of whether it's right or not I still like my take on them.

Ian, Debs, the song and painter are so strongly connected in my head, I really wonder was it him she met on a walk. He so fits the description... And I love
his paintings! Just wish I could see them in reality - and be able to afford one... :-)

"Did you know they can change it all?"
Without our buzzy bees it really will all change, maybe Kate was pre-empting the bee crisis that we're experiencing not only in the UK but all over the world. My friend's Uncle Stan keeps bees in Warwickshire and is very worried about how many he's lost. Support your local bee keepers and buy local honey! Back to the thread however, You Want Alchemy is my third favourite bee-side right behind Under The Ivy (1) and Ran Tan Waltz (2). |

I hear: "Daaaaaamaaaaakiiiiindaaaaa honey"
as: "Turn-that-lilac-in-to-honey" It's my all-time favorite "screeched" line of Kate... ...which makes it my all-time favorite Kate song ever. Who else could put such a beautiful, contemporary spin on Claude Debussy (...besides the Glam Metal Detectives, which is an entirely different post...) Side note to John: No, I don't think the lyrics have ever been "officially" published.

Interesting. This is probably one of the Kate songs I've listened to very little and am least familiar with pre TRS b-sides were mainly on the TWW cds so
I'm far mor e familar with them). It does strike me that this, and the demo of Why Should I Love You that was leaked seem to indicate some of the embryonic
ideas that later became parts of Sky Of Honey. I really like that kind of insight - assumed as it may well be - into the progression of her work.
