I look at it as trying to encourage someone who you care about who is struggling. You want them to believe in themselves as much as you do, but that only THEY can change their situation. You want them to realize how wonderful they really are. All you can do is be there to support and understand them and show them that you care about them. Also I think when someone is struggling, they sometimes reject love/help...which is kind of what the last line means to me. maluslokus wrote: No, I can't see this song being about someone dying, or God for that matter. On thinking it over after reading everyone's posts, it occurs to me that maybe it is all tied in with perception. IE the lyric is based on the idea that angels (or maybe just inspiration/energy/possibility call them what you will) are all around but are invisible to this person. so the angels can only 'help' if you perceive them.... As to why he can't perceive them...I guess I sort of hear Kate saying in this song - if you open your heart (or mind) help will come - but its up to you to open yourself to it... So maybe in these last lines she's suggesting that the angels can be felt but he's just refusing to show it. maybe the idea that its not enough to feel something - you have to express/share/communicate it as well. after all, that process seems to be at the core of all Kate's work really - otherwise she could just sit around her house and daydream all these fantastic ideas rather than write, record and express them. Dunno, just thinking...

Yes,you're right Isabelle,her ma too,and all those she's lost.I especially think about him because it's the first album since he's gone. Yes,i know there's a very discrete mention on DC,but i think maybe because of Kate's decency she doesn't want clearly to dedicate this song to her pa.She can "feel it,but won't show it" it's too intimate to talk about it in public.

It is a strange ending, it feels slightly unnatural. But it must mean something important for her. The way she is singing it I feel more like she is considering two options. First, this person, who has apparently closed down on everything, doesn't know that he is loved. Too much grief and isolation to notice, something like that. Pause, silence, few chords. Or it might be that this person does know that he is loved but is unwilling to show it. Because he is so much closed in by those walls. Because he's decided not to let anybody in. Out of a grudge maybe, or a pay-back, or anything. And still she is reaching out in the song. Very beautiful.

"There's someone who has loved you Forever" Maybe they've never felt loved by me? I always want to show them how much I care, and how much I want to be with them - but there's something blocking my way. So this song reminds me of that... and it's quite painful sometimes.
