Check out John's website www.johncarderbush.com & you will see his projects for next year. I would highly recommend Walking With Billy, The Cathedral of Light & Martin of Munich. The site features some beautiful photographs by his son Gavin. The Cellar Gang will only be available to buy from John's website. Go on, treat yourselves for Christmas. The first 50 novels of the limited edition of 500 are signed & numbered. Below is an excerpt taken from John's feature in HomeGround 76 to give you an idea of what the new novel is about: Years ago, I was a member of the Poets Workshop which used to meet at the old Poetry Society headquarters in Earls Court Square. Many of todays establishment poets were part of the workshops where each meeting a poet submitted works in progress and the others discussed them. In retrospect, this was done with considerable kindness and a genuine desire to help, and it was fascinating to see a famous poet changing a poem because of an intelligent observation from someone else. On one of these occasions George Macbeth (who was remarkable in many ways) had submitted a long elegiac poem about the funeral of the family cat. It was based on the structure of Who Killed @#%$ Robin? In it, all the domestic creatures, spiders, flies, mice etc. came out to watch the funeral cortège go past. The scene was wonderfully evoked by the poem. With that poem a little cobweb at the back of my memory, a few years ago I had been away for the weekend in winter. When I came back I prepared a fire in the grate of the front room, and noticed what at first I thought were pigeon droppings on the floor by the fireplace. Pigeons sometimes came down the chimney. But it didnt quite look like what I assumed it was. It reminded me of something else. A year or so before, one of my sons had gone through a phase of interest in snakes, spiders and lizards, and the last pet he had as the phase, thank goodness, petered out, was a large and very unpleasant lizard. The lizard had escaped, never to be seen again. Then I realised that I was looking at lizard droppings, and not pigeon. Put Victorian houses, pets, families and divorce, and a poem amongst the cobwebs, together, and The Cellar Gang was the result. At that time, in ordinary life, I needed to examine the cycle of domestic disaster I seemed to be caught up in very closely, but I had to examine it from outside as a not so sensitive observer. Looking at it from inside produced plenty of miserable poems and sadness-of-love songs, but that didnt help me in escaping from the cage I had escaped from and then willingly gone back into only to find myself escaping from yet again. So a book with a strict discipline of non-attachment seemed like the vehicle to find the answer. Because I was conscious of creating an allegorical fable I kept the prose style pretty minimalist, and most of the flavour comes from the dialogue of the characters. Nor have I tried to take a moral stand in what, on one level, is a tragic story about a family break up, and on the other a story about fundamental survival, and that attempted objectivity, to my delight, produced a comedy of life and death in which everyone, very justly, gets whats coming to them.
