We have recently removed a number of threads from the forum because they were in clear breach of international copyright law. We know this is a difficult and somewhat emotive subject, so we felt it was a good idea to let you know the basics of the law and where we stand on this.

It is illegal to copy and then sell or distribute copyrighted music or artwork without the permission of the owner, in this case both Kate and EMI and in the case of recent radio interviews also the BBC

It is not illegal to make copies of music you have bought for your own personal use, eg copying a CD onto your ipod, or your own CD compilation etc

It is illegal to use all or part of a copyrighted composition to create another composition, eg sampling a record to make a bootleg, without the copyright owners permission.

Now, we are all aware that people are sampling other people’s work all the time, it has become a large part of modern day recording especially in the dance world, I know I am that soldier, (before any clever sod brings up the fact that under my D-Bop guise, I’ve done my fair share of sampling) and we know that record companies don’t bother chasing down every single sample that appears on a white label in a few dance shops and in principal we at HomeGround do not have a problem with these things being discussed, however, the tracks we removed all included links or information on how to download or buy these items.

We are not an official site or magazine, we have no legal or business connections with either Kate or EMI, but we have worked very hard at building a relationship based on trust and EMI have been great at keeping us as informed as they can. This has nothing to do with censorship; all our members can criticize the forum, EMI, Kate, HomeGround, the media, Peter’s ties, My DJing or Krys’s weird thing about fried eggs, but we cannot allow these kind of links and still expect to have a good relationship with EMI and we certainly do not want to upset Kate.

We hope this is all a bit clearer
